Hope for Sad Parents on Easter

by | Apr 21, 2014 | what you can do

butterfliesEaster isn’t a happy day for many parents. It brings a heavy weight of sadness when a child is struggling or has withdrawn, not wanting any contact. They may not even know where their child is or they may be incarcerated. The possible reasons are too numerous to list. I’ve felt that pain. I understand.

I had to make a choice: Turn inward and feel sorry for myself, or turn to God and let him comfort me.  Which one did you choose?

If you chose to turn inward, wallowing in self-pity and isolation, this blog is for you.

Today, Easter Sunday, has embedded in it the greatest message ever proclaimed to mankind. You may not agree, but this is where I found comfort, hope and strength to carry on when my heart was breaking. And certain holidays only increased my pain, like pouring salt in a wound.

Because God raised Jesus from the dead I believe these things are true:

Death was defeated.

Despair gave way to hope.

Addiction was conquered.

Chains of bondage were broken.

Peace reigned over confusion.

Fullness replaced emptiness.

There are 2nd, 3rd, 4th . . .  chances.

Comfort is available for sad hearts.

Love wins over hate.

Faith makes all things possible.

Lives can be transformed.

Feeling sad? Suffering alone? Turn to the One who has the power of life and death, the Designer of man, Creator of heaven and earth, Giver of all good things, Lamb of God, Source of love, Light of the world, Prince of Peace, King of kings and Lord of lords. Let him be your Helper and Comforter. He longs to be this for you. He’s the Good Shepherd who laid down his life for his sheep – for you and me and every one of our sons and daughters.

“Weeping may last for a night, but joy comes in the morning.”  Psalm 30:5 (NIV)

Today is Easter. To me, that means morning has come. Because death and the grave couldn’t hold Jesus there’s comfort and hope for everyone – for you and for your child. His willingness to die gave us great riches.

“He was willing to die a shameful death on the cross because of the joy he knew would be his afterward.”  Hebrews 12:2 (New Living Translation)

“He gives life and breath to everything, and he satisfies every need there is.”  Acts 17:25  (New Living Translation)

Breathe.

Bring your sadness to Jesus. Let him hold you. You’re going to be okay, even if your child never is. The Resurrection declares you’re not alone. The God of the universe, who raised Jesus back to life, is your Help and Comfort. Your Hope is in Him.
